Abstract
1,221,198. Boring earth and rock. ROCK FALL CO. Ltd. 24 July, 1969 [25 July, 1968], No. 35433/68. Heading E1F. A rock drill comprises a first drilling unit 1 mounted for axial movement on guides 2 and having a rotary head 3 with a hollow spindle 4 coupled by means 6 to an outer casing 10, and a second drilling unit 14 mounted on the guides and independently operable to put a drill string 15 down through the spindle and casing. The coupling means 6 may be a single member threaded to the casing and bolted to the spindle 'by a flange 7, or may comprise two members (Fig. 7, not shown), the upper one bolted to the spindle and receiving the lower member which is threaded to the casing, by a bayonet joint. A flushing swivel (Fig. 8, not shown) may be inserted in the top of the spindle to supply air or water to the casing. The unit 14 may operate by rotation, percussion, or rotation and percussion, and may be used in conjunction with a "down-hole" motor.
