Abstract
1,221,607. Boring earth, &c. ATLAS COPCO A.B. 30 Sept., 1969 [16 Oct., 1968], No. 47979/69. Heading E1F. A rotary earth drill has an expanding bit so that the bit may be retracted through a casing 5 which follows the bit down the hole. The expanding bit comprises a conventional bit, 12, e.g. with tungsten carbide inserts, or a roller bit, mounted on a two part adapter. An upper part 3 of the adapter is mounted on the drill string 1 and the lower part 4 of the adapter is pivoted on the upper part about an eccentrically located bolt 4. The drill is expanded by rotating in one direction, when the bit bites into the surrounding earth, and is retracted by rotation in the opposite directions, abutments 8, 9 stopping the parts when they are co-axial. Internal passages (15, 16, Fig. 2, not shown) carrying drilling fluid are brought into communication when the lower part pivots to the drilling position. In another embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the upper part of the adapter is connected to a percussive drive mounted on the drill string.
