In a clothes washing machine comprising a cabinet having a door 13, and, disposed within the cabinet, a clothes basket accessible when the door is in an open position, drive means for the rotatable structure, a timer manually settable to condition the drive means for rotating the rotatable structure, switch means 19 responsive to closing and opening of the door for automatically enabling and disabling respectively, the drive means, the switch means being rendered accessible upon opening of the door, an interlock means is provided and is rendered effective, when the drive means is conditioned for rotating the clothes basket, to lock the switch means 19 against manual operation while the door is in its open position. A catch member 34 is secured to the underside of door 13 and is adapted to be engaged by a horizontally movable latch bar 36 when the door is closed. The latch bar 36 is of generally Z-shape formation, and is pivotally mounted at 39 on a bracket 38 and urged by a spring 41 to a disengaging position, shown dotted in Fig. 3. The latch bar 36 is moved to an engaging position by energization of a solenoid 43 when a switch 44 is closed by a timer-driven cam 46. On closing the door 13, the catch member 34 depresses a lever 47 which actuates the switch 19, the latch bar 36 being momentarily cammed towards its ineffective position by a surface 49 on catch member 34. An interlock portion 48 is provided on the latch bar 36 and this is positioned to prevent movement of the lever 47 when the door 13 is open.
