Abstract

1,222,826. Washing machines. BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd. 24 Oct., 1968 [25 Oct., 1967], No. 48533/67. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F2] A rotary drum washing machine comprises an automatic sequence control, an interlock arranged to prevent opening of a door giving access to the drum except after certain operations have been completed manually operable means for by-passing at least one operation, and time delay means which prevent release of the interlock for a time sufficient to prevent opening of the door until a safe period has been reached. A spring-pressed door latch 49, Fig. 9, is adapted to be released by a Bowden cable 45 and pivoted lever 43 on actuation of a push-button 47 after the expiry of the safe period. A toothed disc 8 in a sequence tmer 1 has an upstanding wall 8a with a gap 8b which allows pivotal movement of a member 36, connected to lever 43 by links .39, 42, only after the final operation has been completed. The disc 8 is mounted on a shaft 5 which is driven in successive steps, conveniently at two minute intervals, from a synchronous electric motor 2. The shaft 5 also carries a face cam 6 which selectively energises and de-energises various electrical components of the machine. A lever 13 is pivotally mounted on a pin 14 secured to the underside of disc 8. A projection 16 on lever 13 passes through a slot 17 in the disc 8 and is adapted to be engaged by one of four projections 10a of a manual control knob 10 rotatably mounted on the shaft 5, by means of which control knob the programme may be advanced. The lever 13 carries a projection 18 which is urged by a spring 15 into engagement with the inner surface of an annular cam 19. Two steps, or four minutes before the end of the programme the projection 18 enters a cam recess 19b causing the projection 16 to move out of the path of the projections 10a so that by-passing of the final stage, during which deenergisation of the driving motor, coacting of the drum to a halt, and energisation of a drain pump occur, is not possible. A programme indicating pointer 25 is driven by a cord 24 which passes around a drum 26 integral with a gear wheel 20 driven from the toothed disc 8. The machine is started by pulling knob 10 outwards in order to close an isolating switch to supply electrical power to the timer motor 2. Further gaps may be provided in the wall 8a to permit the access door to be opened at various other points in the programme.
