A web is coated during passage round a roll, with a viscous liquid from a slit-like opening of a coating device 2 having an air-filled buffer cavity 1 in communication with the opening and coextensive therewith, the height of the coating gap between the roll and coating device being at least twice the thickness of the liquid coating to be produced on the web, and an adjustable static pressure differential being maintained between the inlet side and outlet side of the gap, the lower pressure prevailing at the inlet side.
