Abstract

Rafts.-A hand-cart particularly for military. transport purposes and convertible into rafts and other articles comprises a body of metal tubes 2, 3 connected to upright socket members 1 into which the axles 7 and shafts 6 can be fitted detachably. The shafts may be held in the sockets by pins 5 which may be passed through the ends of the shafts, as shown, so that they are free to turn in the sockets, or the pins may be passed through both the shafts and the sockets so as to fix the shafts in position. The axles 7 are adapted to slide vertically in the sockets under the action of springs 9. Projections 1 on the axles engage slots in the sockets and pins 5 are passed through the axles and sockets. The shafts and wheels can be packed in the cart body. Several bodies can be attached by U-shaped members passed into the sockets 1 to make a larger cart or a footbridge or gangway. The vehicle is adapted also for use as a table by inverting it and using the shafts as feet, as a raft by filling the body with straw covered by a tarpaulin: as a ladder, or as an observation post.
