Abstract

1293900 Poly(methyl vinyl ketone) fibres KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 15 May 1970 [17 May 1969] 23660/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C1] Fibres of polymethyl vinyl ketone are produced as a step in the production of carbon fibres (see Division C1) by spinning polymethyl vinyl ketone into fibres which are (i) stretch oriented, (ii) dehydrogenated and cyclized, and (iii) optionally heated at up to 350‹ in an atmosphere containing at least one oxidizing gas selected from O 3 , O 2 , air, oxides of nitrogen, SO 3 , and halogens. Steps (i) and (ii) or steps (ii) and (iii) may be carried out simultaneously. Exemplified are (a) melt spinning at 195‹ C. followed by stretch-orienting and cyclizing- dehydrating in 15% aqueous polyphosphoric acid at 75‹ C.; (b) melt spinning at 120‹ C. followed by stretch-orienting at up to 40‹ C. in water, treating in concentrated H 2 SO 4 for cyclization-dehydration, and finally treating in air containing 5% volume NO 2 at 150‹ C. for oxidation and dehydrogenation; (c) contacting the melt spin and stretch-oriented product from (b) with an atmosphere of 80% NH 3 and 20% O 2 at a temperature rising from room temperature to 220‹ at 1‹ C. per minute; and (d) stretch-orienting the melt-spun fibres from (a), contacting the fibres with 100% NH 3 at a temperature rising from room temperature to 200‹ C. at 1‹ C./min., and finally contacting with air containing 1% vol. NO 2 at 110‹ C. for 10 minutes.
