Abstract

1,214,783. Shells. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON BUHRLE A.G. 16 Jan., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 2713/69. Heading F3A. A shell comprises a cup-shaped base cap 6 having an internal support plane 8 and a shell body 1 having a rear end surface 2 which is supported within the base cap by the support plane, in which the shell body consists of a material harder than the base cap and the area of its end surface is smaller than that of the support plane of the base cap, and a plate 9 is arranged between and in contact with the rear end surface of the shell body and the support plane its thickness and hardness being so selected that it can transmit the inertia force of the shell body during firing to the support plane without being bent and sheared off and its area of contact with the support plane being greater than its area of contact with the rear end surface of the shell body so that the specific stress on the supporting plane is smaller than that on the plate and is in a range where no plastic deformation of the support plane occurs. The cap is made of unalloyed steel and the part forming a bourrelet 7 is annealed. The shell body contains an explosive charge 4 and igniting means 5. A ballistic bonnet 10 carries a driving band 11.
