Abstract

1,213,922. Welding by fusion. AMP Inc. 27 March, 1969 [12 April, 1968], No. 15983/69. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2] The end of a wire 12 composed mainly of one metal, for example Al or an Al alloy, is welded to the flush end of an inner sleeve 24, composed mainly of the same metal, of a coaxial pair of sleeves, the outer sleeve 22 of which is composed mainly of another metal, for example Cu or Cu in brass. The sleeves form part of an electrical coupling and are press-fitted, forged or crimped together. The method of welding, described in Specification 1,074,695, comprises the steps of contacting the flush ends with a coaxial electrode E, passing a current at a low voltage through sleeve 22 via an integral portion 18, and drawing electrode E away from the ends to initiate an arc which triggers the discharge of a capacitor to give a large welding current. In the case where portion 18 blocks the path of a coaxial electrode, an electrode with an oblique end is used to contact the flush ends (Fig. 5, not shown). Portion 18 is formed as an apertured flange (Figs. 1-6). It may be replaced by a flange having ribs (64, Fig. 7, not shown) and overhanging side walls. Alternatively, the outer sleeve may have no flange, and merely comprise a nickel or gold plated sleeve crimped to the inner sleeve (72, Figs. 8, 9, not shown). An insulative cap may be snapped over the weld bead. In all cases, an insulative sleeve 30 is provided which shrinks on to wire 12 during welding.
