TERMINAL CONNECTEB.
Application am April as, 1924. Serial in. 709,589.
My invention relates to terminal connecters and provides improved means whereby wire conductors may be brought into firm mechanical and electrical union with terminal contacts without the aid of solder and screws.
In carryin out my invention the terminal contact mem er is formed with a passage therethrough having angularly related ors which receive a conductin wire ent ccnt'orm to the passage and held in one branch of the passage by a surrounding element of the container, this surrounding element being preferably in the nature of a 7.55 metallic sleeve held within a carrier of in- :-;uiating material. P
The invention will be more fully explained connection with the accompanying drawin which Fig.1 is a longitudinal sec- Ill w tional view of an electric coupling whose contacts are assembled with conducting wires in accordance with the referred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a ion gitudinal view, partially in section of one of the coupling members shown in Fig. 1; Fig.
3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. i is a longitudinal sectional view of another form of connector; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the cylindrical metallic contact members.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the didercnt figures.
Each coupling member shown in Figs. l. to t inclusive includes an insulating contact carrier l-having, in Fig- 4:, one bore 2 and, in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, two such bores. Each bore contains a cylindrical metallic sleeve or I tubular element 3 having rims 3 engaging shoulders 2 each having a cylindrical bore, held tightly within the bore of the corre sponding contact carrier. A cylindrical rne=- tallic contact member i is snugly received in the bore of each sleeve and has a sinuous passage formed with an intermediate portion 5 extending transversely therethrough and narrower longitudinal end portions 6 and 7 at the outside of and extending respectively toward the ends of this contact member. A wire 8 passes through said sinuous passage and is tightly engaged between themetallic sleeve and the nvlindrical (2011- trical union of the wire with the contact member 4; to which it extends.
In the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of the contactmembers 4 of the left hand coupling member has a split and hollow plug continuation '9 and the members uponthe other can ling member have socket continuations 10 w ich receive the plugs 9.
In the structure of Fig. 4 the contact member f the left-hand coupling member receives an inwardlyspring pressed contact 11 engaging the butt end 12 of the complemental contact. The carrier llfor this latter contact is. provided with two bayonet pins 13 receivable in bayonet slots 14L formed in the shell 15 which permanently holds the left hand carrier. J
In assembling the contact carriers with the contacts of my invention the wires are looped into the contacts before the contacts are assembied with the carriers whereafter the contacts are drawn mto the boresof the f carriers.
It will be observed that the cylindrical contour at each cylindrical contact member is intact except at the end portions of the passage to enable engagement'of the contact members with the enclosingsleeves in the zones of the ends 01": the passage.
is ebvieus that changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my inventicn.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 2- in a terminal connecter, a carrienmember formed transversely provide in conjunction With said transverse o ening a Wire receiving passage of sinuous s ape, the material of said Wire receivin A the recess ad acent thereto for contact with memos the Well of the bore in said carrier member to prevent tilting movement of the contact member Within said bore. m In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name.
