Abstract

1,212,117. Pencil sharpeners. J. S. STAEDTLER. 3 Dec., 1968 [7 Dec., 1967], No. 57441/68. Heading B6P. A circular container 1 with a cover 2 rotatable about a pin 6 has a sharpener carried by a ball-like member 11 mounted in a socket 7 in the cover 2. In operation, the pencil inserted in the sharpener is used as a crank to rotate the cover 2. In so doing, with the ball-like member prevented from rotating in the socket 7, the sharpener rotates relative to the pencil. The ball-like member is held in the socket 7 by a cage member 9, Fig. 2 and (Fig. 3). A spring 13 engaging a boss 12 on the ball-like member 11 allows a certain amount of universal motion but prevents complete rotation. In (Fig. 4) opposed transverse springs prevent rotation of the ball-like member. Sharpening is by means of a blade 16, several blades or a milling or abrading tool.
