The angle of inclination of a pencil 22 may be varied, to suit the angle of lead required, with respect to conically tapered abrasive surface 9. The cover 5 has a cylindrical recess 18 which receives a rotatably adjustable pencil holder 23 having a split portion 24. The socket 25 of the holder 23 is disposed at an angle to the axis of rotation of the holder, such that by rotation of the holder the pencil may be presented at varying angles to the surface 9. The surface 9 is provided in a radially slidable member 8 urged downwardly by a spring 13, such that a friction surface 12 on the base thereof engages a bearing 6.
