This invention relates to pencil sharpeners.
The most'commonly used forms of peneil Sharpeners require the use of both hands for the manipulation of the same, the pencil being held by one vhand and the cutters or eutter head being actuated by the other hand.
One important objectbf the present i11- vention is to provide a novel form, of pencil lo VSharpener wherein the hand 'hold-ing the pencil is also used to manipulate .theSharp- .ening mechanism.
A second important object of .the lIlYention is to provide an improved form Of Such mechanism which maybe taken apart with ease for the purpose oi sharpening .or re acters of referenceindicate likdparts-in the several views, and:

shaft is fixed a spur pinion 41 wherewith meshes a vertical rack 42 passing upwardly through a guide 43 on the plate 19 and through a guide 44 on the top 16. Therack 42 is continued upwardly in a rod 45 terminating at its top in a head46. Projecting upwardly from the lower plate 11 is a small tube or guide 47 and projecting downwardly `from thelower end of therack 42 is a stem 48 which slides in this guide, a spring 49 surroundingthetube 47 and stem 49 and norfinally holding the plunger formed by the'rack and rod 45 with" its head 46, in a raised position. VA guard tube 50 surrounds the spring and lower parts of the plunger to prevent clogging by the chips and dust which collect in the lower part of the casing because ofthe operation of the device.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures and 6 the cutter head carries a worm or spur gear 5l vwherewith meshes a multiple threaded worm 52'sliding through a guide 53 on the plate 19. Thisworm 52 hasa rectangular opening therein which receives a rectangular guide bar 54 projectingup from the bottomplate 11v so thatthe'worml 52 may move vertically but cannot rotate. A spring 55 'surroundsthe' bar 54 and'normally holds the worm raised. There hasthusbeen providedV asimple and efficient device of the kind described andfor the purpose specified.
-It isY obvious that minor changes'ma'y'be made in the form and constructionof the "invention without departingfrom the material spirit thereof.4 It is not, therefore, desired with said pinion.
to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
