Abstract

1,211,775. Tiltable rotary furnaces; metallurgical converters. SOC. DES FORGES ET ATELIERS DU CREUSOT. 12 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1911/68. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for melting and refining scrap iron or iron powder or sponge comprises a rotary melting converter 1 mounted in a cradle 4 tiltable about a point 5 with a burner 15 and oxygen lance 23 mounted on a movable hood forming a stack section 16. The converter rests by rings 10 and 11 on rollers 8 and 9 on a driving shaft 12, which also carries discs 14 restraining the rollers endwise. The burner 15 incorporates oxygen ducts or lances (21, Fig. 2) turned inwardly, whereby the flame is shrouded by oxygen to prevent smothering by the fume produced. Alternatively, the burner may operate on considerable excess of oxygen to produce the same effect. Carbon monoxide formed is burnt with oxygen supplied through lance 23.
