Abstract

1447690 Steel from scrap or sponge NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR METALS 10 Oct 1973 [11 Oct 1972] 47401/73 Heading C7D Steel scrap or sponge iron is melted, carburized 0.6 to 3% of carbon e.g. with coke, carbon, propane or methane, and then blown with oxygen in an amount more than stoichiometrically equivalent to the carbon content. In a particular embodiment scrap 1 is pre-heated by hot waste gases from the refining furnace and/or combustion gases from chamber 5 while passing on conveyer 6 to induction melting furnace 3 where carbon is added through conduit 8. Molten metal is discharged continuously or intermittently to refining furnace 9 where it is blown with oxygen from lances 10". fluxes being added from lance 10. Final additions are made in holding furnace 18 and the metal continuously cast.
