Abstract
<PICT:1042032/C6-C7/1> Plant for the refining of steel comprises an open hearth furnace heated by roof burners 7-10 and having the hearth divide by a bridge 13, and converters 14, 15 movable between the slag pockets and the casting bay on rollers 17 engaging rails 16 and fed with molten metal through tapholes 11 and 12. Separate offtakes 21, 211 are provided for the waste gases and each converter has a vertically movable oxygen lance 18. When refining is taking place in one of the converters, the associated offtake is closed by a damper and the effluent gases pass over the furnace hearth supplementing the heat supplied thereto by the burners and passing out through the other offtake. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the furnace has a normal, single hearth and a converter at one end with its associated offtake 21, the other end having a straight-sided refining vessel incorporated in the normal waste gas system in the slag pocket. There refining vessels are supplied with molten scrap tapped normally from the furnace and with molten pig iron while in the casting bag.
