Abstract

1,205,167. Armour - piercing shells. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. 8 July, 1968 [13 July, 1967], No. 32511/68. Heading F3A. [Also in Division F1] An armour-piercing shell comprises a body 1 constituted by more than 90% of uranium U238 and a hardening additive such as tungsten and/or cobalt, an axial passage 2 terminating in a nozzle 3, and pyrotechnic ignition means 4 for causing; in the initial phase of the flight of the shell, the ignition of the inner wall of the passage 2 which, from that moment, behaves like a ram-jet playing the role of a self-propulsion device for the shell. The means 4 is ignitable by the propellant gases from a cartridge and acts as a tracer in the initial phase of flight of the shell.
