Abstract

1,204,700. Driving stranding machines. GENERAL CABLE CORP. 1 Dec., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 54720/67. Heading D1T. A cable-stranding machine of the kind in which there are a plurality of supply bobbins angularly spaced about the cable by a rotatable frame, and feed means for advancing the finished cable, is characterized by means for speeding up the rotation of the frame and said feed means as the diameter of the reels of wire on the bobbins decrease. The frame and the feed means are in substantially constant speed relationship. The decrease in diameter of a bobbin is sensed by the resulting increase in rate of rotation of the bobbin. This increase in rate of rotation of a bobbin may be determined by means of a generator responsive to the speed of rotation of the bobbin holder. The rotatable frame and the feed means are driven by a common motor, the feed means or the rotatable frame being connected to said motor through a variable speed transmission that is adjustable to change their relative speeds and so change the lay of the cable. In Fig. 2 the bobbin 44 drives a tachometer generator 50 coupled to a voltage divider or inverse function generator 66. Another tachometer generator 70, driven by the main drive motor 22, is also coupled to the generator 66. The generator 66 supplies a control signal to an integrating circuit 76 controlling a siliconcontrolled rectifier 78 connected with the field of the main drive motor 22. Thus the speed of the motor 22 can be caused to increase in a manner causing the output of the tachometer generator 70 to match the ever increasing output of the tachometer generator 50.
