Abstract

1,201,702. Metal impregnated carbon. SOC. LE CARBONE LORRAINE. 28 Feb., 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 9725/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division B3] Porous industrial carbon (including graphite) is impregnated with molten metal by forcing the metal into the carbon in the presence of a substance which lowers the surface tension of the metal-carbon couple. The substance is preferably ammonium phosphate or boric acid added in an amount which will comprise 0.5 to 5.0% wt. of the finished product. A carbon of 35% vol. porosity was impregnated with copper in the presence of 5% wt. boric acid to produce a material having a residual porosity of 10% and a copper/impregnated product weight ratio of 62%.
