Abstract

1375916 Carbon composite BENDIX CORP 17 Nov 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 53262/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division F2] A brake disc is made from a composite material comprising a porous carbon carrier into which is impregnated a metallic material or an inorganic non metallic material having a thermal capacity by volume greater than that of the carbon substrate. Preferably the thermal capacity of material is greater than that of carbon both by volume and by weight. The exemplified materials are Be, BeO, Li 2 O and B 4 C, and cryolite, beryllium carbide and boron are mentioned. The material used preferably has a melting point, and most preferably both melting point and boiling point, lower than the maximum temperature to which any disc made from the composite is expected to be exposed during use.
