A process for inserting prewound coils into stator and like slots comprises passing an ironing member 32 into a slot 12 to effect compression of a first coil 14, simultaneously carrying a second coil 16 or 18 into position wherein it at least partially enters the slot longitudinally while the first coil is maintained at least under partial compression, and simultaneously covering the second coil with insulated wedges 20 to provide a compressed mass of superimposed coils. The apparatus 22 for performing the process is moved by a stripper 80 via a rod 33, the apparatus passing through the stator 10. The coils 16, 18 are placed between stationary fingers 48 and wedge guides 50, and the stator 10, with the coils 14, is positioned on top of the guides 50. The stripper 80 is then moved upwardly so that tapered faces 34 of the irons 32 enter the stator slots 12 to compress the coils 14 therein. The stripper engages the coils 16, 18 to push them along the fingers 48, down inclined faces 92 of the guides 50 and into the slots 12. Simultaneously, the stripper has been moving wedge pushers 60 so that their respective wedges 20 are just behind the irons 32. As the ends 40 of the irons clear the slots 12 the wedges are fully inserted therein and the apparatus 32 is lifted off the rod 33. The stator 10 is then removed and the end turns of the coils 16, 18 can be formed outwardly in any suitable manner.
