Abstract

1,199,160. Crying and pouting doll. DE LUXE TOPPER CORP. 20 Sept., 1967 [6 Feb., 1967], No. 42803/67. Heading A6S. A doll comprises a reservoir 54 for a tearsimulating liquid, conduits 76 extending therefrom to eye-holes 78, and an appendage whose movement actuates means for selectively permitting or preventing liquid flow from the reservoir. As shown arms 22, a drum 31 and a disc 32 are rotatable on a shaft 26: the arm's are normally urged towards the raised position, in which the tear-producing means are inoperable (fig. 4 not shown), by a spring 34. The arms may be lowered against the action of the spring to the position of fig. 6, which is maintained by a latch 41 engaging a slot 42 in the drum 31, and which is released by depressing a button 47, connected by a yoke 49 to the latch 41. In the lowered position the tear-producing means is actuated, liquid flowing to conduit 76 through a valve 73. In the arms raised position this is prevented by the action of a spring 83 on a movable valve disc 81. On lowering arm 22, a stud 94 on the drum 31 moves downwards; this motion is transmitted via wire links 92, 90 to a lever 87 pivoted on the reservoir cover 55, thus raising the valve disc 81. Simultaneously a plug 98 is pushed down against the force of a spring 101 to allow air to enter the reservoir. The arms are also used to change the facial expression of the doll. For this purpose a pivoted jaw. 103 and a fixed jaw 102 grasp a resilient pouch 112 integral with the resilient lips 113 (forming a smile in the armsraised position; fig. 5, not shown). As the arm 22 is raised, the motion of the link 92 is transmitted to the pivoted jaw 103. The pressure exerted on pouch 112 is such that lips 113 take on a pouting expression ('fig. 7, not shown). The doll may be in the form of an animal whose tail may constitute the appendage for controlling crying and pouting.
