Abstract

1,198,693. Cleaning metallic surfaces. BERATHERM A.G. Aug. 2, 1967 [Aug. 2, 1966], No.35548/67. Heading C7E. The internal metallic surfaces of steam power plants, heating systems, superheaters or boilers are cleaned by conveying a current of wet steam or gas along them and injecting into the current, in order a) a non-ionic wetting agent, b) 0-1-2% by weight of one or more acids known to form a complex with a metal, c) hydrazine and cyclic amines, or inhibited mineral acids with a pH range of 3-5 in the liquid phase, d) an agent for neutralization. Suitable complex-forming acids are citraconic acid anhydride, acetone di-carboxylic acid, gluconic acid, ethylene tetra-acetic acid and formic acid, and the neutralization agent may be an aqueous solution of ammonice and hydrazine with a pH of 8À5-10. Between the addition of the complex-forming acids and that of the neutralization agent, nitric acid may be injected. Preferably water under pressure and at 120-200‹ C. is forced into the apparatus to be cleaned, and turns to wet steam on entry. Subsequently the apparatus may be dried with superheated steam.
