Abstract

1,195,464. Blasting. VACU-BLAST Ltd. 24 Jan., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6457/68. Addition to 1,102,688. Heading B3D. A grit blasting apparatus comprising an enclosure with an open side adapted to contact around it the workpiece to be treated and means within the enclosure for projecting a stream of abrasive through the said open side on to the workpiece is characterized in that there is provided sealing means around the boundary of the open side comprising two or more impervious flexible seals with an annular space between them to which a sub-atmospheric recovery pressure is applied and at least one aperture communicating between the annular space and the atmosphere for the entry of scavenge air into the said space. Apparatus similar to that shown in Fig. 6 of Specification 1,102,688, has fitted around the edge of the open side of enclosure 1 a double row seal 11, 12 made of a flexible abrasion-resistant impervious material, such as rubber, which makes contact against the work surface 10 to prevent the escape of abrasive or debris. The space 13 between the seals is connected by hose or hoses 14 to the vacuum source so as to remove any abrasive and debris which has passed the inner seal. If the enclosure is mounted beneath a horizontal work surface 10, the hose 14 can be replaced by ducts connected back into the enclosure 1. Air entry ports 15 are provided, fitted with a wire mesh screen 16 or a baffle to prevent the escape of abrasive or debris; the ports are preferably located opposite the take-off connections.
