Abstract

1,191,851. Pipe stoppers. E. PASS & CO. Ltd. 31 May, 1967 [1 March, 1966], No. 9022/66. Heading F2P. An expansible plug for plugging a pipe P by insertion through two holes H, H<SP>1</SP> which have been drilled in opposite pipe walls using known pipe-embracing and drilling assemblies, comprises an expansible, e.g. axially split, cylinder 12 having cylindrical rubber sleeve facing 15, a pair of opposed axial cylinders 19, 20, each having outer walls of truncated conical form, slidably mounted for movement in opposite directions on spaced pistons 17 and 18 at the end of an hydraulic ram 11, hydraulic fluid supply passages 26-33 for introducing fluid to said cylinders either side of the pistons, and a plurality of angularly spaced members 34 disposed between said cylinders and the interior wall of the cylinder each member having at least three edges which contact the outer walls of the said cylinders and the interior wall of the said cylinder. In use, the ram lowers the plug to lie transversely of the pipe, the lower flange of flanges 13 and 14 of the expansible cylinder seating on a shelf S of pipe-line embracing assembly A. Hydraulic fluid is supplied through ports 30, 31 to cause the cylinders to move towards one another and thus expand the expansible cylinder thereby plugging the pipe. The cylinders 19, 20 may be mounted with their wider ends adjacent, the shape of the members 34 being suitably modified so that expansion takes place when the cylinders are moved apart.
