Abstract

933,739. Drill rod couplings. C. R. WOODRUFF, and E. JOHNSON, [trading as JOHNSON-WOODRUFF CO.]. Sept. 11, 1961 [March 8, 1961], No. 32519/61. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A drill rod coupling comprises interengaging spigot-and-socket portions B, A screwed and welded to the ends of adjacent rod sections 12, 14, and of the same internal diameter, with a series of axial dowel pins 43 to prevent their relative rotation, an outer shouldered sleeve C with lugs 65 engaging similar lugs 50 on the socket A locking the members longitudinally. The sleeve C is slid axially over the members B, A, the lugs 65 passing through the spaces between the socket lugs 50, and is then rotated so that wedge surfaces on the ends of the lugs may draw the members A, B together. The sleeve is held in position by axial bolts 70 whose lower ends engage chamfered portions of the upper edges of the lugs 50. Pressure tightness is ensured by 0-rings 25, 40a, 44.
