Abstract

1,190,729. Tube joints. TUNZINI AMELIORAIR S.A. 6 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 11942/69. Heading F2G. In a tubular heat exchanger comprising a nest of tubes 1, e.g. of borosilicate glass, extending between tube plates 5 the ends of each of the tubes being mounted via sealing means in associated apertures 4 in the plates, the sealing means comprise a sleeve made of elastically deformable material, e.g. consisting wholly or predominately of polymerized tetrafluoroethylene, having at least two axially-displaced sealing zones 7a, 7b linked by a connecting zone 7c, at least one of the sealing zones 7a being external and having a diameter such that when the sleeve is positioned in the associated aperture this sealing zone contacts the edge of the aperture, another of the sealing zones 7b being internal of the sleeve and having a diameter such that when the tube is inserted within the sleeve this zone embraces the tube to effect a seal. As shown in Fig. 3, the tube is provided with a collar 1a, and the sleeve has a flared extension 7e, the aperture being provided with a recess 4a which is filled with a sealing joint 9 formed by a mastic, injected plastics material or a ring of plastics material. In modifications, (a) the moulded sleeve has two external sealing zones 7a, Fig. 4, and may have an encircling seam 8 of a material more easily deformable than that of the sleeve, and an internal sealing zone 7b cylindrical in form, there being at one or both ends a skirt 7d; (b) one of the sealing zones 7a contacts the wall of the aperture 4; (c) the seam 8 is replaced by a flexible, radially extending collar which, on assembly, is deformed to press against the wall of the aperture whereby sealing is augmented by fluid pressure; and (d) one of the external sealing surfaces 7a is cylindrical in form.
