Abstract

1,186,676. Balancing rotary members. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 Aug., 1967 [10 Aug., 1966], No. 35819/66. Heading F2U. Relates to means for dynamically balancing a rotating body 1 by masses which cannot conveniently be located in the same radial plane as that of the body and hence would otherwise produce an unbalanced couple. For this purpose pairs of masses 7, 11 and 8, 12 are arranged in spaced planes on a hollow shaft 2 attached to the body 1, each mass of each pair having an equal moment about the axis of rotation as the other mass of that pair, masses 11 and 12 being secured to an inner shaft 9, and masses 8, 7 to an intermediate concentric sleeve 4. By turning the four masses together relative to the body 1 during rotation, the plane of the couple they produce can be brought into coincidence with the plane of the unbalance in the body 1, as indicated by minimum unbalance. The pairs of masses can then be turned relative to each other to vary the magnitude of the unbalance of the mass pairs until it balances that of the body which is then balanced for forces and couples. The masses may also be axially movable. The shafts 4 and 9 are rotated by an electric motor 13 through pinions 16 and 17 and worm gears 25, 27 and 31, 33 respectively, engagement of an electromagnetic clutch 18 driving the shafts in the same direction, and engagement of clutch 22 driving the shafts in opposite directions.
