Abstract

1,185,143. Hydrofoil craft SOUTHERN HYDROFOILS Ltd. 20 March, 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 7921/66. Heading B7A. A catamaran craft comprises on each hull 1 a hydrofoil 5 pivotable about a horizontal axis 4 upon a strut 3 adjacent the bow 2 and a pivoted predictor-arm 7 coupled by mechanical, hydraulic and/or electrical means (not shown) to said hydrofoil, a planing member 11 beneath a streamlined part 10 of the predictor arm being pivotal vertically and coupled to said arm by spring-loading means 15 so that minor undulations in the surface of the water do not affect the hydrofoil 5. The predictor arm is pivoted at 6 and controlled by damping means 12. Retracting means 14 lift the predictor arm to the position shown in phantom lines in Fig. 1 when the arm is not in use. The damping and retracting means may be constituted by a single hydraulic piston-and-cylinder device or by individual fluid-operated piston-and-cylinder devices as shown. It is indicated that the invention is also applicable to a single-hull craft, a trimaran or a " sea sled " having one hull and at least two bows and two keels
