Abstract

1,184,247. Propelling pencils. PARKER PEN CO. 7 Sept., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966], No. 41003/67. Heading B6P. In a retractable propelling pencil, a continuous lead feed mechanism 27, which is retractable within the barrel 11 of the pencil, comprises a lead storage magazine 29, a lead guide tube 31, a lead advancing mechanism 33, an actuating spring 41 and a collet 35. Axial reciprocation of an eraser assembly 57, removably mounted to the end of the magazine 29, non-rotatably mounted in the barrel 11, causes axial movement of the magazine 29 and guide tube 31 relative to the advancing mechanism 33, thereby causing feeding of a lead. Depressing the eraser assembly 57 also projects the feed mechanism 27 in the barrel 11 against the return bias of a spring 43. The feed mechanism 27 is latched in the projected position by a leaf spring (73, Fig. 2) attached to the magazine 29, engaging a detent (97) on a pivotally mounted pocket clip. The feed mechanism is released from the projected position by pivoting the pocket clip. Whilst in the projected position, the lead feed mechanism 27 can be operated to advance a lead by depressing the eraser assembly 57. This operation does not retract the pencil, but merely moves the leaf spring (73) away from the detent (97), to be returned when the pressure on the eraser assembly is released. In a modification of the project-retract mechanism (Fig. 7), the leaf spring (129) is released from the detent by a radially movable pushbutton (145) mounted in the pocket clip. (Fig. 8) illustrates another form of pivoted pocket clip for releasing the detent mechanism.
