In a fountain pen; e.g. a ballpoint pen, having a writing unit resiliently supported in the writ-, ing position a helical spring at one end is clamped around and bears against an abutment on a guiding sleeve for the writing unit and at the other end is clamped around and bears against an annular corrugation in a further sleeve which grips the writing unit in a releasable manner. The rear end of the writing unit b is slidable in the guiding sleeve d in the rear end of which is inserted a pushbutton e. A helical spring i is clamped on the front end of the guiding sleeve with its rearmost convolutions and abuts against an annular corrugation k on the sleeve. At its other end the spring i is clamped on the rear portion of a sleeve l and abuts against an annular corrugation m therein. The front portion of the sleeve l is of reduced diameter and slit as at n to produce springy portions which grip the unit b and abut against a collar p formed thereon. Thus the writing unit is resiliently supported in the guiding sleeve d when the latter is displaced axially by actuation of the push-button e and the writing point is thereby projected from the barrel. The barrel a is in two parts and when these are separated the writing unit b can be withdrawn forwardly from the sleeve l and a new unit inserted. A member 1 is secured to the barrel and has claws 3 at its front end which claws engage a projection 4 integral with the sleeve d in the retracted position of the writing unit b. A short sleeve 5 is slidably mounted on the sleeve d and is frictionally held by a projection 7 on the member 1 while the guiding sleeve d is pushed forwards by means of the push-button e until a corrugation 8 engages it. Claws 3 engage behind a projection 10 on the sleeve d and thereby latch the unit b in writing position. A further depression of the push button e causes the sleeve 5 to force the claws 3 apart whereby when pressure on the pushbutton is released the claws will ride over the projection 10 as the sleeve d and unit b are carried back to retracted position by a retracting spring.
