Abstract
1,182,660. Refrigerators. VORTAIR ENG. Ltd. 19 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 57602/67. Heading F4H. A transportable, heat insulated container 1 has an apertured floor 2, the space beneath the floor being supplied with cold air from at least one vortex tube. As shown, two vortex tubes 7 supply cold air to apertured pipes 8 beneath the floor and air is vented from the top of the container through outlets 11. The container is mounted on a vehicle and the vortex tubes are supplied with compressed air from a compressor 4 via a heat exchanger 5 cooled by the air flow caused by motion of the vehicle. Outlets 11 may be closed and air recycled to the compressor through line 14 in which case exchanger 5 is by-passed via line 15. The compressor is driven by a motor 3, e.g. an I.C. engine, which is started and stopped, or has its speed varied, by a thermostat 12 in the container. The hot air from the vortex tubes is discharged through conduits 7<SP>1</SP> and may be used to heat other parts of the vehicle or the container itself, or for defrosting. In the latter case valves 10 are opened to supply hot air to the pipes 8. The air inlets for the vortex tubes may be provided with couplings to enable them to be connected to the compressed air main of a ship.
