642,271. Refrigerator cars &c. INDUSTRIAL PATENTS CORPORATION. April 5, 1948, No. 9460. Convention date; May 3, 1947. [Class 29] A refrigerated transportation unit, e.g. a rail car, or a case for carrying on aeroplanes or ships, has its walls formed of a number of compartments some of which contain a liquid to be frozen while the others have a refrigerating medium circulated through them, and may subsequently be exhausted to provide additional insulation . Fig. 1 shows vertical tanks 11 .. 15 secured to the walls of a refrigerator car, alternate tanks 11, 13,15 &c. being connected to a refrigerant supply header 25 at the top and an outlet header 20 at the bottom from which the refrigerant may be withdrawn through a valve 26<SP>1</SP>. The other tanks are filled with eutectic liquid, and after this is frozen the tanks 11, 13, 15 &c. are subject to vacuum through a pipe 21 leading to a vacuum pump. The goods are spaced from the tanks by louvres 40, Fig. 3, which allow flow of air. Refrigerants used are salt brine, calcium chloride brine, tetracresylsilicate, or liquid carbon dioxide or other expanding refrigerant. The refrigerant may be expanded in two stages first into the tanks through expansion valves 27 and then directly into the lading space through expahsion valves 30. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the walls 50 between the eutectic chambers and the refrigerating chambers are corrugated or provided with fins 51 to increase the heat transfer, and the chambers are of trapezoidal cross section to expose only a small area of the eutectic chamber to the outside insulated surface 10 of the car &c. Where the outside ambient temperature is lower than that desired in the car a heating medium may be circulated in the tanks.
