1,178,750. Production of glycol ethers. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 29 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 59179/67. Heading C2C. Glycol ethers of the general formula wherein R is an alkyl radical (C 1-4 ) and n = 0-3 are prepared by reacting 2-methoxyethyl chloride with an alcohol or alcoholate of the general formula R 1 O-(-CH 2 -CH 2 -O-) n -R wherein n and R are as hereinbefore defined and R 1 is hydrogen or an alkali metal atom, in the presence of a solvent selected from a saturated aliphatic alcohol (C 1-4 ) and/or a non-cyclic glycol ether, and, at least when R 1 is hydrogen, in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. The non-cyclic glycol ether, as solvent, may be the same as. the desired glycol ether product and the saturated aliphatic alcohol, as solvent, may be the same alcohol as that with which the 2- methoxyethyl chloride is reacted. Specified examples prepare 1,2-dimethoxyethane, 1-methoxy-2-ethoxy ethane, diethyleneglycol dimethylether, triethylene glycol dimethylether, diethylene glycol butylmethylether and triethylene glycol butyl methylether.
