Abstract

1,047,408. Methyl formate. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 2, 1965 [June 4, 1964], No. 23518/65. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of methyl formate comprises reacting methanol with carbon monoxide at greater than atmospheric pressure in the presence of an aliphatic alcoholate, potassium, rubidium or caesium as catalyst. The alcoholates may be derived from alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol or from a monohydroxy compound boiling above 100‹ C. and below 170‹ C. at atmospheric pressure, such as a monohydroxy alkyl(poly)ether (particularly 2-methoxyethanol) and may be used in an amount from 2 to 10% by weight.
