Abstract
1,174,486. Coating apparatus. S. P. LIPOMA, H. E. WATKINS, D. L. WARD, P. C. MURRAY, H. R. ROBERTS and J. T. HOURIGAN [trading as LIPOMA ELECTRONICS CO.]. 6 Feb., 1967, No. 31940/69. Divided out of 1,174,485. Heading B2L. [Also in Division A2] In a method and apparatus, Fig. 1, for applying particles of an edible, solid substance to food products 210 being conveyed on a travelling conveyer 211, the particles are fed, as from a hopper 215 provided with an adjustable gate 217 and a feed-plate 216, to a feeding member 212, which extends across and above the conveyer, and a high potential difference, e.g. ranging between 3,000 and 50,000 volts, is established between the member 212 and the conveyer 211, which is connected to a further member 225, such as a conductive rod, located above the member 212 so that the member 225 and the conveyer 211 are at the same potential, and particles are attracted upwardly, in the direction indicated by the arrow 227, from the member 212 towards but not on to the member 225, and then fall along trajectories, e.g. between limiting trajectories 229 and 231, on to the food products 210: the greater the potential difference, the greater the range of spread, e.g. the distance between the trajectories 229 and 231. The feeding member 212 may be a rotating roller (as shown) preferably having a roughened outer periphery, or an endless belt passing around a roller. Alternatively the feeding member may be a reciprocating or vibrating inclined plate (255) Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) preferably having a rough upper surface. According to the invention, sugar may be distributed on to sweet rolls, salt or particles of cheese on to potato crisps, and cinnamon, pepper, flour, or barbecue sauce powder on to food products. The potential difference may be varied according to the type and size of the edible particles: the smaller the particles the less the potential difference. If the member 225 is disconnected, the edible particles leave the roller 212 in substantially tangential paths 220, as disclosed in the original Specification 1,174,485.
