[Also in Divisions C1, F1 and F3] A carbon felt assembly for thermal insulation is made from layers of pure viscose rayon felt cemented together with a carbonizable thermosetting resin such as a furanic resin and then curing and carbonizing the assembly. The carbon felt may then be graphitized and it may be reinforced by impregnation with pyrolytic carbon. The assembly may be shaped by machining or milling. An example describes the preparation of a tubular sleeve. In a modification, cement is applied in dots to previously carbonized felt.
