Abstract

1312258 Fibre reinforced carbon body PLESSEY CO Ltd 29 May 1970 [31 July 1969 18 Nov 1969] 38458/69 and 56333/69 Heading C1A A high strength carbonaceous body is prepared by forming a body consisting of partly fired high modulus carbon fibre material, i.e. organic fibre material which has been subjected to the initial part of the process to produce carbon fibres and which will be converted into high modulus carbon fibre when subjected to carbonization in a resin matrix, together with an uncured phenolic resin, heating the body so formed to cure the resin and obtain a body consisting of partly fired high modulus carbon fibre material in a resin matrix and carbonizing the resulting body so as to produce such high modulus carbon fibres. The carbonization treatment may be such as to convert the resin matrix into vitreous carbon. The carbonization may be carried on until a temperature is reached which lies between the minimum temperature at which high modulus carbon fibres are formed and 1800‹ C. at which the formation of true vitreous carbon is completed. If desired, the carbonization may be carried on to a temp. beyond that at which the formation of true vitreous carbon is completed. The phenolic resin may be chosen so as to shrink less during the carbonizing treatment than the partly fired fibre material, thus producing a body in which the fibres are under longitudinal stress in the carbon matrix.
