Abstract

1,150,133. Carbon electrode. SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT G.m.b.H. 16 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 22775/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C1 and H2] The transverse/longitudinal resistance ratio of a commutator brush is increased by providing at least one layer of woven carbon material embedded longitudinally in the brush body. Preferably the woven material is of animal fibre, e.g. wool, and is partly carbonized and impregnated with a binding agent to improve its adhesion to the carbon body material. The brush is made by placing layers of the powdered body material in a mould separated by the pre-treated woven material and pressing at a pressure of 2 tons/sq. cm. The moulded body is then carbonized at 900‹ C. and graphitized at 2800‹ C. to produce a finished brush having a transverse/longitudinal resistance ratio of about 6:1.
