Abstract

Floatable waste material is fed with a non- combustible liquid to the lower part of a chamber 20 to float in a layer within a combustion ring 55. Primary air is blown through nozzles 69 across the surface of the layer, and secondary air at a lower pressure is supplied through the annular outlet 54 of an air box 51 mounted outside the combustion ring 55. The primary air nozzles 69 extend through the air box 51. Further primary air is supplied above the ring 55 by nozzles 71 delivering downwardly and tangentially, and tertiary air is supplied at the base of the stack 22 by nozzles 74. If the amount of combustible waste is insufficient to allow continuous operation, the liquid is passed through a settling tank until a sufficient layer of waste is accumulated. The layer is ignited by pouring fuel oil on top of it, or applying oil through a spray. Shafts 39 with intermeshing fingers 40 are rotated to stir the layer of waste during combustion.
