These rods 101A-C, operated by the dobby, act on a wobble plate 92 and the rod 82 rests against the other side of the plate at such a position that it receives displacements according to a binary scale as a result of equal displacements imparted by the dobby to the rods 101A-C. Manipulating weft. Each weft thread, Fig. 11, runs from a bobbin 32A-F, through the wire loop of a thread guide 21, and round a fixed rearwardly-facing hook 37 to the selvedge of the fabric. As shown, the weft 32A has been selected by swinging the guide 21A clockwise, which causes the weft to enter a cutter and clamp 14 mounted on the slay; the weft is cut near the selvedge and held by the clamp as the slay recedes. The weft also becomes engaged in a hook 136 mounted on the slay at a higher level than the clamp 14. The piece of weft between the clamp and the hook 136 lies in the path of the weft inserter 3 which has a forked head to take a loop of weft into the shed. At the middle of the shed, the weft is transferred to a hooked needle (not shown) and the clamp 14 releases it to allow it to straighten out into a single pick. As the slay moves forward again,- an arm alongside the hook 136 lifts the weft out of hook so that it returns to its normal position as shown for the thread guide 21B.
