A nut runner comprises an air motor 10, whose shaft 16 is connected to a shaft 18 by a pin 20, shaft 18 being connected to a sleeve 30 by a lost motion pin and slot connection 26, 28, sleeve 30 being pinned to a drive shaft 34 provided with segmental slots 36 which co-operate with a pin 38 in an output shaft 40, and torsion springs 50, whose ends are connected to shaft 40 and to a casing 46. A sleeve 52 is connected to shaft 40 by a pin 54, and a spring-urged socket 60 is slidably located in the sleeve by a pin and slot arrangement 64, 66. Cams 70, 72 are adjustably fixed on a support 74 secured to casing 46, and an insulated commutator 76 carries an electrical pick-up 82, and receives a low-voltage signal from a brush 86. In operation, the runner is preloaded by applying a wrench to socket 60, rotating the latter relative to casing 46, and then locking shaft 34 by a draw plug 44, making certain that pin 38 is in the Fig. 3 position. The air motor is set so that it will stall when the required torque is applied to the nut. The drive to the socket is through springs 50 until the predetermined torque is reached, whereupon the motor 10 stalls, there is relative rotation between the casing 46 and shaft 40, and if pick-up 82 touches either cam 70, 72, a circuit is completed through brush 86, commutator 76, arm 84, pick-up 82, the cam and its support, and the machine, so as to indicate a-torque which is either above or below the acceptable torque tolerance range.
