Abstract

1,162,861. Transferring glass film. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 8 Feb., 1967 [16 Feb., 1966], No. 6030/ 67. Heading C1M. Apparatus for transferring thin glass film, as from a film drawing machine, comprises a fixed roller 16 rotatable about a first axis 15; a pair of axially aligned, spaced-apart edge rollers 29 rotatable about a second axis 28 and positionable with and out of co-operating relationship with opposite ends of the fixed roller 16; covering means 49 on the fixed and movable rollers 16, 29 to provide a resilient, heat-resistant, substantially abrasion-free contact between the rollers 16, 29 and the thin glass film and wherein the fixed roller 16 and the edge rollers 29 are continuously rotatable in opposite directions at equal speeds irrespective of the position of the edge rollers 29. Roller shaft 15 supported on bearings 14 fixed to frame 11 and roller shafts 28 supported in bearings 26, 27 are interconnected by a pivot shaft 13 in bearings 12 fixed to frame 11, the bearings 26, 27 being secured to support arms 21, 22 pivoted on shaft 13. A tie bar 25 connects arms 21, 22 and a spring 41 pressed against the bar 25 to press the rollers 29 towards the fixed roller 16, the pressure being adjustable by nut 42. Shafts 15 and 13 are driven in opposite directions by connecting drive gears 17, 19 and each shaft 28 is driven in all pivoted positions from shaft 13 by a belt 34 and pulleys 32, 30, respectively. Movement into and out of operative position of the rollers 29 is effected by an air cylinder 43 pivoted to bar 37 which is connected to arms 35 pivoted on shaft 13 and to the tie bars 25 by threaded rods 38 on which the springs 41 are secured. The covering means 49 for the rollers 16, 29 are preferably threaded sleeves of silicone rubber secured on the threaded parts 47, 48 of the rollers. The apparatus is preferably driven through shaft 15, but the drive may be connected to shaft 13.
