Abstract

858,578. Laminating. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 7, 1959 [July 17, 1958], No. 23269/59. Class 140. An apparatus, for applying pressure to curved glass sheets to be laminated, comprises a frame and a rolling assembly supported therewithin, said assembly comprising a plurality of opposed pairs of freely rotatably elastomer roller components arranged across the frame to press on the sheet in a direction substantially in or parallel with the plane of the frame, as the sheet passes through the frame, the roller components of each pair being movable along the line on which they apply pressure independently of the roller components of any other pair. As shown, an inner frame 26 is pivotably mounted in the base structure 11. Two rows of rubbercovered rollers 75 and 78 are mounted in yokes on the ends of shafts 54, which are slidably mounted in the frame 26. The rollers are 'pressed towards one another by springs of which one end of each is connected with the adjustable tension-plate 62 on the shaft 54, and the other end with ears 68 on the frame 26. Air or hydraulic cylinder devices may be substituted for these springs. A gap in the lower row of rollers 78 is occupied by a driving-unit 79 comprising a cylindrical hub provided with a layer of rubber divided into two sections. Between these sections is a sprocket driven by transmission means (not shown) from the electric motor 111 mounted on the frame 26. The frame 26 may be held stationary by the straps 118, or these may be removed and the frame and all that it carries rotated by means of the hand wheel 117, or by power-operated means. Stops may be provided to limit this rotation. Specifications 708,702 and 774,067 are referred to.
