Abstract

1,161,490. Accumulating strip material; rolling. T. SENDZIMIR. 20 Dec., 1966, No.56933/66. Headings B3A, B3M. [Also in Division B8] Strip material is accumulated by forming a first spiral coil 102 from which the strip is led into a second spiral coil 104 before being finally withdrawn, the strip material between the coils being guided by means 135 which can be moved with respect to the coils to cause the material to accumulate or diminish in the coils. In one embodiment, the strip 1 is withdrawn from the interior of an upper coil 102 and fed into the interior of a lower coil 104 by driven rolls 103 of the guide means 135 rotatably mounted on a turntable 106, which is stationary only when the exit and entry velocities of the strip are equal. The strip is guided out of and into the respective coils by a guide roll 304, 309 attached to a movable arm 305, 310 pivotally connected to a cradle 145, 146 which is in turn pivotally connected to the turntable 106. The convolutions of the coils are supported and advanced by driven rollers 112 positioned slightly off the radial position to control the relative tightness of adjacent convolutions. The convolutions may be spaced apart by ribbed supporting rollers 131a. The two coils may alternatively be arranged side by side (Fig. 5, not shown). In an alternative embodiment, the two coils (150, 151) (Fig. 3, not shown) are arranged concentrically on independently driven annular roller tables (153, 154). The strip is withdrawn from the interior of the outer coil (150) and fed around rollers (166,167) on to the outer convolution of the inner coil (151), from the interior of which the material is finally withdrawn. The rollers (166, 167) are rotated to remove from or add material to the coils. The strip accumulator of the invention may be used to permit, for example, a rolling mill to operate continuously while the trailing end of the strip is welded to the leading end of another length of strip (Fig. 6, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) a closed loop of strip is repeatedly passed through a mill and the strip accumulator until the required gauge is achieved.
