Abstract

978,819. Coiling. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. June 26, 1963 [Nov. 14, 1962], No. 25370/63. Heading B3E. A method for obtaining a helical winding of a metal wire comprising coils inclined relative to the axis of winding and offset from each other comprises continuously bending the wire at a periodically variable radius of curvature. Wire F from a reel B is fed by rolls 2, 3 between rolls 5, 6 and against an offset roll 7. The roll 7 is eccentrically mounted on a spindle 8 carried on a transversely adjustable carriage 10 on a longitudinally adjustable carriage 11. The feed of the wire F rotates the roll 7 or the roll 7 may be driven by a motor 4 which drives the feed rolls 2, 3. The outside diameter of the coils and the curvature or otherwise of the axis of the coil is determined by the form of the roll 7 and its distance from the rolls 6, 6. The plane of the roll 7 may be offset from the plane of the wire feed to form a toroidal coil, Fig. 7. The roller 7 may be placed between the rollers 2, 3 and 5, 6. The roller 7 could be inclined relative to the plane of the wire feed. The roller 7 may be smooth, i.e. without a peripheral groove.
