In a machine for feeding strip stock 23 from a coil 11 to a machine which consumes the strip intermittently e.g. a punch press, shears or stamping machine, a variable length loop of the strip is suspended beneath the coil 11. In a first embodiment the coil 11 is supported on a continuously rotating expansible arbor 12 and the strip 23 leaves the coil 11 and passes over support rolls 21, through a washing and straightening device 24 having brushes 37, 39 and straightening rolls 42, and along a variable length loop to intermittently rotating feed rolls 30. The strip may be supported after straightening by a support 59 which can be moved into operative position by piston and cylinder 62. The size of the loop may be controlled by an arm 65 which operates a switch 67 to control the speed of the arbor 12 or the feed rollers 30. The coil 11 is loaded on to the arbor 12 by a cradle 14 running on rails 15 and the free end of the strip is guided to the feed rolls 30 by rollers 48<11> which are moved to an inoperative position 48 by piston and cylinder 56 and lead screw 53 driven by motor 54. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) the strip leaves the coil 11 vertically, passes through straightening rolls, and turns through 180 degrees while supported by rollers 85. The strip then passes along the loop to the feed rolls as in the first embodiment. In both embodiments the expansible arbor may be replaced by a pair of cone-shaped coil supports, the coil being loaded by a cradle running on rails arranged longitudinally of the machine. In order to allow loading the guide 48 is split into two sets of rollers, each engaging one edge of the strip, and the two halves are movable laterally of the machine to allow the entry of the cradle.
