Abstract

1,157,868. Pipe joints. ENFIELD PLASTICS Ltd., and D. W. BOAST. 10 April, 1968 [18 April, 1967], No. 17824/67. Heading F2G. A securing flange 21 is formed on a pipe 16 by heating a ring and then shrinking it on to the pipe to form the flange. As shown in Fig. 1, the flange and the pipe are grooved as at 20, 22 to provide keying, the grooves being of triangular, rectangular or other shape. If desired, only the flange or the pipe may be keyed, or the keying may extend only partly round the circumference. The flange 21 is secured in the socket 13 of a fitting by axial pressure of a nut 15 and pressure in the pipe 16 tends to expand the flange 21 in the socket to produce a seal. However, an O-ring may also be employed. Expansion of the pipe may be accommodated by allowing the pipe some clearance at its end, and contraction by leaving a gap between the rim 19 of the nut and the flange 21. In a modified form, Fig. 2, the flange 33 is of tapered section so that it may be compressed by axial pressure of the nut 24 into a conical coupling part 29. The pipe has a rectangular groove 32 into which fits a triangular ridge 34 on the inside surface of the flange. In either embodiment, the screwnut may be replaced by other fixing devices, such as a snap-on cap. The joint may be plastics.
