Abstract

1,157,001. Pyridine and substituted pyridine. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 Sept., 1967 [5 Sept., 1966], No. 39581/66. Heading C2C. The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of pyridine or substituted pyridine which comprises interacting a starting material containing a partly or fully reduced pyridine ring, e.g. piperidine or tetrahydropyridine with molecular oxygen in the liquid phase in the presence of ions of a metal of variable valency, for example, iron, cobalt, nickel or chromium, but the use of cupric ions is especially preferred, which ions may be derived from inorganic salts, for example, cupric nitrate, cupric or ferric halides or ferric ammonium sulphate, or from organic salts; in particular salts of carboxylic acids may be used, for example cupric acetate. Whether the metal ions are present or not, it is preferred to carry out the reaction in the presence of ammonium ions preferably introduced in the form of an ammonium salt; such as aliphatic carboxylic acids (for example ammonium acetate) and the salts of mineral acids (for example ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and ammonium halides). Alternatively, gaseous ammonia or a solution of ammonia may be introduced into the reaction mixture. Amides hydrolysable to form ammonium ions, for example formamide or urea, may also be employed. The examples show the production of pyridine from 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine and piperidine.
