Abstract

1445288 Iron oxides TDK ELECTRONICS CO Ltd 13 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 49118/74 Heading C1A Goethite (FeO.OH or Fe 2 O 3 .H 2 O) is prepared by reacting an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of nitric or chloric acid (i.e. a nitrate or chlorate) with a ferrous salt in the presence of sufficient excess of alkali to give an initial pH of more than 13. The ferrous salt used may be the nitrate, sulphate or chloride, while the oxidant may be the nitrates or chlorates of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium or ammonium. Other metallic elements, such as nickel, may be incorporated with goethite by addition of their salts to the reaction mixture. The goethite may be converted to γ-ferric oxide by dehydrating it and then (a) reducing and (b) re-oxidizing the product.
